More about Oromia Coffee Farmers Cooperative Union, Ethiopia

In the southwest Ethiopian region of Limu, the Oromia Coffee Farmers Cooperative is a union of 34 small cooperatives benefiting over 22,000 smallholder farmer members. Oromia is the region where coffee first originated. Limu coffee is grown at about 1,100-1,800m above sea level.

OCFCU pays 70% of its net profit back to the cooperatives and the cooperatives also pay 70% of their profit back to the member farmers. This shows that farmers are benefited by being paid three times in one coffee season. The life of farmers has improved and they now have social service in their village.

How much coffee do you really need?

Coffee isn’t one-size-fits-all — it starts with choosing the right use and type. Are you brewing espresso or filter coffee? Prefer the convenience of ground coffee or the freshness of whole beans? Making the right choice ensures better flavour and less waste.

Next, think about how many cups you drink per day. A single cup typically uses about 7–10g of ground coffee, so if you’re making 2 cups daily, a 250g bag lasts about 12–14 days. Brewing for a household or office? You might want a larger size or a subscription.

Storing your coffee

To keep your coffee tasting fresh, store it in an airtight container away from light, heat, and moisture — ideally in a cool cupboard (not the fridge!).

Preparing the perfect coffee

Preparing your coffee right is key: grind just before brewing for the best flavour, use filtered water, and measure consistently for balanced results. Whether you’re pulling a shot of espresso or steeping a slow pour-over, your method matters.

Finally, enjoy your coffee your way — black, with milk, over ice, or as an afternoon pick-me-up. Coffee is a ritual, a pleasure, and a small moment of joy every day
